Data however refused to do so saying that Slessshh was underestimating the human's strength. Data then decided to beam down, unarmed to the Gorn council chamber to demonstrate his point.
Data then called Slessshh and the gorn weak. Data, at the behest of Capt. Picard, then challenged Slessshh to fight him. Data was able to defeat him and force the gorn war fleet to stand down.
TNG comic : " The Gorn Crisis ". In , Data was part of an away team to investigate the Cardassian freighter Kamal , which the Enterprise had discovered in the Badlands.
The freighter contained the Orb of Memory which caused the away team , including Data, to suffer flashbacks to people and events in their lives.
DS9 novel : Avatar, Book One. Given Data's impressive abilities and usefulness to Starfleet, it was not uncommon for him to be called to serve on other missions away from the Enterprise from time to time.

In Data served as technical advisor during the development of the highly experimental USS Incursion. He joined the Incursion 's crew in the shakedown cruise testing the Incursion's holographic systems and subsequently found himself in the midst of the Warden plot to take over the galaxy.
During the crisis he was recalled to Earth to help decode warden transmissions and was almost assassinated by Warden agents, fortunately he was rescued by the Incursion 's crew and rejoined the vessel to help bring down the Wardens.
TNG video game : Away Team. In Data was assigned to the USS Sovereign to assist in the investigation of the Vesuvi Event. It was discovered that a rogue Cardassian faction was responsible.
Data received orders from Vice Admiral Liu to track down the device that the Cardassians were using to destroy star systems.
A device was located on Alioth VI, but unfortunately, the Sovereign was discovered and attacked by a Cardassian fleet, forcing the crew to leave Data behind on the hostile planet for several months.
He was recovered by the crew of the Sovereign and later was able to establish a dialogue with the Kessok after the Sovereign 's captain initiated a peaceful first contact.
After the conflict in the Maelstrom region was resolved, he returned to the Enterprise. TNG video game : Bridge Commander.
In , Data had his emotion chip forcibly removed following an incident at the Rashanar Battle site. TNG novels : A Time to Be Born , A Time to Die.
In , he commanded the Bravo team mission to infiltrate the nadion-pulse cannon firebase located in the Solasook Peninsula on Tezwa. The mission was successful after Data was able to interface with the base computers allowing him to send false signals forcing the crew to abandon the base.
It was on this mission that Commander Riker was kidnapped and held captive for one month. During Riker's captivity, Data served as acting first officer of the Enterprise.
It was Lieutenant Vale's belief that Data went without any rest for this entire one-month period.
TNG novels : A Time to Kill , A Time to Heal. After Riker's return, he approached Captain Picard about taking crew of the Enterprise with him to the USS Titan.
Picard was fine with this except that Riker was not allowed to take Data as Picard felt that he had earned his chance to become first officer of the Enterprise.
TNG novel : A Time for War, A Time for Peace. Towards the end of the year, Data sacrificed himself to rescue Captain Picard and destroy the Reman warbird Scimitar thereby preventing the deaths of the Enterprise -E's crew.
TNG movie : Star Trek Nemesis. Following his death, the copy of his neural net he uploaded to B-4 failed to take hold and Data, including his memories, were lost.
PIC episode : " Remembrance ". In , a USS Titan crew member remarked that the Daystrom Institute had been trying to recover the mind of Lieutenant Commander Data for almost three years.
TTN novel : Seize the Fire. In , Data's memories were transferred into a new body designed and constructed by his father who at first transferred his own consciousness into the body in an effort to prolong his life for a continuation of his work on androids.
This body was human in appearance and was even able to give off Human lifesigns. Overall, it was a better body than the one Noonien Soong had made for Data on Omicron Theta.
Soong had originally planned on resurrecting Data with a body even more advanced than the one he made for himself, but mid-construction, during the Borg invasion of , Soong's lab was destroyed in a Borg attack.
Having lost all of his work, Soong had no choice but to seek out other methods. Unfortunately, he found he was unable to make a new body in time to save Data's memories.
Having only one option, he came up with a way that would save B-4 and bring back Data in exchange for his life.
His plan was put into motion at the last possible moment due to the sudden kidnapping of all the Soong-type androids. Soong chased the ship that stole the androids to a K class planet and indirectly solicited help from Enterprise.
Soong went with an away team to recapture the androids from the Breen. After dispatching the guards, Soong upgraded B-4's firmware so Data's memories would survive the transfer to Soong's own android body.
When the transfer was successful, Soong deleted himself to allow Data to take over the new body. Though Soong had deleted his own consciousness, his collective knowledge and memories are still accessible to Data.
After his resurrection, he transported himself and his old compatriots onto Soong's ship, Archeus , and hailed the Enterprise , requesting permission to land.
Picard rendezvoused with them in the landing deck; Worf being the first to descend from the ship, followed by La Forge, B-4 carrying Lal and, finally, Data, whom Picard had initially mistaken as the same person he had seen on Galor IV.
After a tearful, albeit brief reunion, Data denied Picard's offer to reactivate his commission. Later, while preparing to leave, Data professed his reasons for doing so to La Forge, who had come to see him off.
Data proclaimed that he is not the android his friends had once known, but, rather, a new model or updated copy of his former self. Before entering the Archeus , he leaves La Forge a quantum particle entanglement device, which, he explains, can be used to contact him immediately.
He goes on to say that when he is ready, he will come back for Lal, whose body will be stored in a secure vault beneath Starfleet Command headquarters in San Francisco.
Data then declares to La Forge how he intends to find Emil Vaslovik , who had revived Juliana Tainer after her total cascade failure, and inquire how to repair a positronic matrix after such an event, so that he may revive Lal.
TNG - Cold Equations novel : The Persistence of Memory. In November , Data, Shakti Archeus A. Barclay, back on Galen , was happy to see his formerly dead friend Data resurrected.
The Doctor confirmed the mobile emitter was non-replicable. TNG novel : The Light Fantastic. Shortly after the return of the USS Enterprise to Earth following the battle with Shinzon , Picard and B-4 were paid a visit by Q.
Over the objections of Picard, Q restored Data to life in B-4's body. TNG novel : The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard.
In , on stardate When the restored Data first gained consciousness, he objected to the fact that his restoration was at B-4's expense, and immediately attempted to destroy his own consciousness to preserve B However, B-4 sacrificed himself to prevent Data from dying.
Through this, the android was able to help the Soong Foundation in upgrading the positronic brain and help in the recreation of the emotion chip originally developed by Doctor Soong.
Ambassador Spock likened it to his resurrection a hundred and two years previously , though Data likened it more to a return. ST - Countdown comic : " Number Two "; STO novel : The Needs of the Many ; ST website : The Path to By , Data was active in Starfleet and had risen to the rank of Captain.
Data assumed command of the Enterprise -E, after the retirement of Captain Picard from Starfleet. He saved Spock and Nero from a Reman attack.
I admired his positive attitude, his sense of duty, and his willingness to collaborate with those completely unlike him for the benefit of the greater good.
I also happened to look a lot like my favorite robot already. It was a big hit! Back in the day, Seattle was the top ratings market for TNG, Deep Space Nine and Voyager , and there were conventions in Seattle, Portland, and nearby Vancouver, Canada, just about every four months.
When we were finally toe to toe, she looked me in the eyes, and a wave of disappointment washed over her face. I decided right there to get some yellow contact lenses when I returned home so that I could take my cosplay to the next level.
Hopefully, the next time you run into me at a convention I'll have rounded out some of the cosplays on my Data wishlist.
Eric Allan Hall has been costuming since Transplanted to Utah from the Seattle area in , Eric has attended about 80 conventions since he first started cosplaying — often with his family.
Red Alert! After Picard dies, while Altan Soong transfers Picard's consciousness into a golem intended for his own consciousness, Picard meets with Data inside the simulation.
Data requests that Picard terminate his consciousness, which would allow Data the experience of living, however briefly, believing that he could only truly live if he had a finite lifespan.
Once Picard awakens, he carries out Data's wish and Data's consciousness rapidly ages to death, Picard giving a brief eulogy as he observes that what made Data remarkable was his ability to see humanity's worst traits and still aspire to the best parts of the human condition.
Data is immune to nearly all biological diseases and other weaknesses that can affect humans and other carbon-based lifeforms. This benefits the Enterprise many times, such as when Data is the only crew member unaffected by the inability to dream and the only member to be unaffected by the stun ray that knocked the crew out for a day.
One exception, however, was in the episode " The Naked Now " where Data was also a victim of the Tsiolkovsky polywater virus.
Data does not require life support to function and does not register a bio-signature. The crew of the Enterprise -D must modify their scanners to detect positronic signals in order to locate and keep track of him on away-missions.
Another unique feature of Data's construction is the ability to be dismantled and then re-assembled for later use. This is used as a plot element in the episode " Time's Arrow " where Data's head an artifact excavated on Earth from the late 19th century is reattached to his body after nearly years.
Another example is in the episode " Disaster ", where Data intentionally damages his body to break a high-current electrical arc, and then Riker takes his head to engineering to solve an engine problem.
Data's officer's quarters is unique in that it does not contain a bathing facility or bathroom, instead containing a work station with seats, eventually becoming also occupied by Spot, Data's cat.
Data is vulnerable to technological hazards such as computer viruses, certain levels of energy discharges, ship malfunctions when connected to the Enterprise main computer for experiments , and shutdowns whether through remote control shutdown devices or through use of his "off switch", located on his lower back near where a human kidney would be.
Besides Data, very few members of the Enterprise crew are aware of this switch's existence for reasons of security, including Captain Picard, Commander Riker and Chief Engineer La Forge.
Crusher, who is bound by her Hippocratic Oath forbidding her from divulging this to anyone without Data's express permission, was the first member of the crew to be made aware of its existence in the first-season episode " Datalore ".
Data has also been "possessed" through technological means, such as Ira Graves's transfer of consciousness into his neural net; Dr.
Soong's "calling" him; and an alien library that placed several different personalities into him. Data cannot swim unless aided by his built-in flotation device, yet he can perform tasks underwater without the need to surface.
Data is also impervious to sensory tactile emotion such as pain or pleasure. In Star Trek: First Contact the Borg Queen grafted artificial skin to his forearm.
Data was then able to feel pain when a Borg drone slashed at his arm, and pleasure when the Borg Queen blew on the skin's hair follicles.
Despite being mechanical in nature, Data is treated as an equal member of the Enterprise crew in every regard.
Being a mechanical construct, technicians such as Chief Engineer La Forge prove to be more appropriate to treat his mechanical or cognitive function failures than the ship's doctor.
His positronic brain is deactivated, repaired, and reactivated by Geordi on several occasions. Data is physically the strongest member of the Enterprise crew and also is, in ability to process and calculate information rapidly, the most intelligent member.
He is able to survive in atmospheres that most carbon-based life forms would consider inhospitable, including the lack of an atmosphere or the vacuum of space for certain periods of time, though he appears to breathe.
As an android, he is the most emotionally challenged and, with the addition of Dr. Soong's emotions chip, the most emotionally unstable member of the crew.
Before the emotion chip, Data was unable to grasp basic emotion and imagination, leading him to download personality subroutines into his programming when participating in holographic recreational activities most notably during Dixon Hill and Sherlock Holmes holoprograms and during romantic encounters most notably with Tasha Yar and Jenna D'Sora.
Yet none of those personalities are his own and are immediately put away at the conclusion of their usefulness. Also, the abilities of Data's hearing are explained in the episodes " The Schizoid Man " and " A Matter of Time "; his hearing is more sensitive than a dog's and that he can identify several hundred different distinct sound patterns simultaneously, but for aesthetics purposes limits it to about ten.
Throughout the series, Data develops a frequently humorous affinity for theatrical acting and singing. This is most definitively demonstrated in Star Trek: Insurrection where Picard and Worf distract an erratically behaving Data by singing two parts of A British Tar , compelling Data to sing the third part.
Data has at least five robotic siblings two of which are Lore and B Later on, his "mother" is revealed also to be his positronic sister as the real Julianna Soong died and was replaced with an identical Soong-type android, the most advanced one that Dr.
Soong was known to have built. Data constructed a daughter, which he named "Lal" in the episode " The Offspring ". This particular android exceeded her father in basic human emotion when she felt fear toward Starfleet's scientific interests in her.
Eventually, this was the cause of a cascade failure in her neural net and she died as a result.
Star Trek: Picard revealed that Noonien Soong also had a biological son, Altan Soong; when Picard meets with Data's consciousness in a computer simulation, Data acknowledges Altan as another brother.
In the Star Trek science fiction universe, Data has a storage capacity of quadrillion bits which is In the comic book miniseries Star Trek: Countdown the official prequel to the reboot Star Trek film , Data, having successfully transferred his positronic pathways and memories into B-4, now commands the Enterprise -E in in its mission to stop the Romulan Nero.
Spock compares Data's "resurrection" with his own death and return years earlier. In the novels published by Pocket Books and set after Nemesis , Data returned in by having his memories and neural net transferred from B-4 into a new body which contained the memory engrams of Data's creator Doctor Noonien Soong after he was dying and being attacked by Lore years earlier.
Data then takes control of the body after Soong deletes himself. After a tearful reunion with his old shipmates, Picard offers to reactivate Data's commission and to rejoin the crew but Data declines as he says he requires time.
Several months later, with the help of the Enterprise crew, he is able to obtain the help necessary to resurrect his daughter, Lal.
The novel The Buried Age , set between the destruction of the USS Stargazer and Picard being appointed captain of the Enterprise -D, depicts Data's first meeting with Picard, during a mission where the two also work with then-Lieutenant Kathryn Janeway , which depicts Picard encouraging Data, who has prior to this been stuck in relatively menial roles because he was uncertain how to express ambition, to push himself and specifically request assignments.
This advice leads to Data receiving a promotion and commendation when he uncovers a plan to sabotage the design of the still-in-development Galaxy -class ships, with the admiral overseeing Data's promotion assuring Data that there will be a place for him on a Galaxy -class ship when they are completed.
In the prologue to the novel adaptation for Encounter at Farpoint by David Gerrold , Data chose his own name, due to his love for, and identification with, knowledge.
Data also tried his hand at various styles of painting, but realized that his knowledge of previous styles overrode any personality he could put into the art.
He also plays poker, knows blackjack and learned Stratagema well enough to tie gamesmaster Sirna Kolrami - but he once lost a tri-dimensional chess game to this officer.
Due to his programming and superhuman abilities, Data is by definition an exemplary officer, but those same abilities have also been proven an Achilles' heel of sorts - as when he was overcome by his "brother" Lore , or the homing signal once used by his creator Soong, among other instances on record.
The recent Borg invasion and his capture and hoped-for assimilation as a potential ally is yet another. Unfortunately, as the only android in the service, the natural disinclination to attribute command abilities and respect to an artificial being - as well as the long-undetermined issue of his self-determination rights - hampered Data's command advancement and led to service in operations division only.
Despite his long career he was not placed even in acting command until assuming the con of the U. Sutherland during the blockade of Romulan aid to the Duras Klingon faction in Data also devised the first known defense to the Picard Maneuver in , nine years after it was first used.
Bio-engineering Review: Joint Report of CMO Beverly Crusher, M. Data, who weighs kg. This switch is known only to the senior staff of the Enterprise : commander, first officer, chief engineer, chief medical officer and ship's counselor.
As designed he is programmed not to lie or deceive, recalls everything he's ever been exposed to, cannot use verbal contractions, and has super-human strength, dexterity, voice duplication, self-diagnostics, and "fully functional" male sexual abilities without the emotional attraction.
Though he approximates fellow humanoid sleeping patterns and workshifts, he of course needs no actual rest and often takes the helm during the "night watch.
Experiments into his direct input into or remote control of ship's systems have been uneven, but his unique abilities have been invaluable in securing the safety of ship and crew in numerous crises and far outweigh, in our opinion, any potential weakness they present.
